In class this past Friday, we discussed the scarcity of water and how we waste it. And since that discussion...nothing has changed in my life. Although walking out of class I felt bad about how I waste water and even though I said to myself, "I'm going to be careful with how much water I use" I never followed through with it. I'm pretty sure I took a long, hot shower that following night.
I still think it's sad how much water people wast just because we have a lake right next to us. It's especially sad when you think about how many elder, adults, and children who die each year due to the lack of water. Even though many people feel this way, I think for a lot of these people, like me, they won't change their ways. Our nation is so used to having access to water and to having a lot of it, that it will take something pretty drastic to change our ways. It's the same logic with our economy. It became so bad that families finally had to start cutting back on everything. I think that this kind of disaster will have to happen in order for people to also cut back on water usage.
What do you think it's so hard to us to cut back on the amount of water we use?

I think that some habbits are just hard to kick. We have spent the past 10 years of so using as much water as we want. And now, we as Americans are realizing that we need to start conserving water. And with a lake right next to us, I think it is extremely easy to just forget about the crisis.
I think the "bigger is better" mythology has tapped into our water system as well, but in this case its just "more is better"- same difference though. It is unfortunate that the amount of excess in our culture is going to darken our future. Though at the same time, I'm not shortening my showers unless my dad gets mad about the water bill.
and be sure to check out my blog :)
I agree with all the comments, I think that we all use too much water, and could use a little less. I know that over this past summer I was in Australia and I went to this place where their was a huge drought, when taking a shower it had to be like 4 minutes. They can not wash their cars or water their grass, they could not take baths. If they over used a certain amount of water per month, then they were fined. I think that there is no way that I could live like that, with the way that I have been living my life for 16 years, but I also think that it is a good way to live and not waste water.
I will!
I am the same way as you Abby. I always say that I am going to start saving water my taking shorter showers and turn off the water when I am brushing my teeth but that never happens. I is a bad habit of mine to keep the water running while I am brushing my teeth. Sometimes I try and take short showers but then they end up being 15min instead of a 5-10min shower. I believe that all Americans use too much water and that we need to start conserving water or one day we will be left with no more fresh water. We as Americans need to start conserving water.
